Tom Flaten, VP Field Operations at Thorn Valley, sat in on the Technology’s Impact on Today’s Transportation Claims panel at the 26th annual TIDA (Transportation Industry Defense Association) conference in Austin, TX on October 4th, 2018. Panelists included Jessie Fontenot, Jr. Strauch, Greene & Mistretta, Trefor Urrelman, ATTIC RRG and Aaron Kiefer, Accident Research Specialists.
Here are some notes from attending this session:
• Primary monitoring and reporting systems are; Drivecam (Lytx), Omintrac and Smart Drive. These systems push data (GPS, etc.) to group “Container systems” selecting which files to push to data > attached to “VCE File” (or SVU). VCE files are Data Files primarily associated with Trimble Business Center GPS Survey Data Processing). Although videos are purged every 6 – 12 months (depending upon service provider) “metadata” is not (which can remain discoverable indefinitely).
• Systems installed as little as 2 years ago designed to capture only 6 seconds prior to/after crash can now, due to exponential increase in technology and memory storage, may be continually recording and storing event data indefinitely. This can be a good or bad thing, depending upon claim. i.e. It could be helpful in determining location of IV against a phantom claim, or it could be produced as evidence during litigation.
• A related panel included Bill Venegoni, Walmart US-Legal who discussed how recent company system conversion resulted in significant claims management process changes. Primary takeaway – Corporate or Insurance Claims should be included on any and all telematics solution enhancements and process changes and upgrades.
